why does a light strike on cue ball makes it rolls for some distance, whereas a firm hit keeps it stationary?

currently researching on pools/billiards/snooker, and its connection to mathematics. Is there a math concept behind this?

I'm assuming you're talking about when you hit the cue ball straight into an object ball.

When you hit the cue ball in the center with a hard stroke, the cue ball will be sliding along the top of the cloth. 100% of the cue ball's energy is moving in a straight line. Because of the laws of conservation of energy and conservation of momentum, and because the cue ball and object ball are of the same mass, the cue ball will transfer 100% of it's energy and momentum to the object. Therefore, the cue ball must stop to satisfy the laws of physics.

When you hit the cue ball lightly, it slides briefly, but then begins to ROLL forward. When the cue ball is rolling, it has both a straight line component to it's force, as well as a rotation component to it's force. When the cue ball strikes to object ball, it transfers it's straight line force into the object ball, but only a small fraction of it's rotational force. This has to do with the friction (or lack thereof) between the two balls, as well as the friction between the balls and the cloth when contact is made. Since the cue ball maintains most of it's rotational force, it can still roll forward after contact with the object ball.
