tips on buying a pool cue?

I am wanting to buy a pool cue for my friend as a Christmas present. He just got me started playing pool, so I know nothing about what to look for as far as quality. He himself plays pool regularly and obviously knows a bit more than I. He has said before that the reason he doesn't have his own cue is because "A really good player can win with the house cues" but I still thought his own cue would be a good idea for down the road when he gets his own table. So what do I look for as I go shopping? What questions should I ask? Briefly looking at prices I have seen them range anywhere from $15 up to $200 and I'm sure there are even more expensive ones then that. I'm willing to spend up to $60 but i'm still not sure what to look for

Weight and craftsmanship are the most important.
Check the dovetail joints if any for gaps, put the shaft on and roll it across a pool table to check for straightness.
Avoid the cheap ones with adjustable weights.
