Tips Shaft Wrap

im new to fly tying, i need help with hackle!?
basically when im tying flys i have pretty much finished but i still have to put the dreaded hackle on. so my thread is at the eye of the hook. the hackle is attached a little lower down the shaft of the hook. so i wrap it around with my hackle pliers then when i get to the end i find it really hard to tie it off. no matter how many times i wrap my thread around the end it sometimes just comes off. its really annoying and it makes a mess fo the fly. is there an easyer way to tie off hackles or is there a much simpler way. i see people bend the hackle back but my fingers wont fit around it. its really confusing. anyone got any tips to get my hackle looking good? thanks
First off don't worry about it! lots of beginners new to fly tying have this problem, i was recently invited to my local fly shop to help the owner teach the dry fly tying class he was holding. Ive noticed this is a big problem for a lot of beginners, so you aren't the only one!
First you need to ensure you leave adequate space to tie off your hackle, often two turns is enough, you will see beginners winding way to much thread on to secure the hackle.
Next thing, you need a hackle guard, this slides over the hackle after you have locked it with the thread wrap, then allows you to create a taper, build up a head and whip finish with ease.
*you can make one of these with the pen top from a biro pen,, cut of the clip and make a hole to allow the hook eye to slip through, in turn this will push your hackle back, you can also buy them.*
Next tip is, dont wind on too many turns of the hackle, twice is generally enough, but once again it depends on the fly!
When you secure it, leave the hackle pliers attached, add two thread wraps and remove hackle pliers, then snap the stem off, as opposed to cutting which leaves a small stump.
Slide on your hackle guard and build up a small neat heat then whip finish.
Other tips
Use a finer diameter thread, 8/0 and 6/0 are good for most flies but decrease in size for small dries, you will find it easier.
Rotary hackle pliers will help you a lot when winding on the hackle, plus they give you more space. Add some thin rubber tube to the grips for protection of your hackle.

Cataract SGG Counterbalance Shaft with Wrap and Stop (10 ft.) $174.95 This 10' Cataract SGG Oar Shaft has an internal counterbalance weight in the handle area. This offsets the weight of the blade and shaft past the oarlock for easy, low fatigue rowing. The SGG shaft, with its spiral wound fiberglass and carbon fiber lay up flexes and rebounds like a wooden oar, without the maintenance issues of wood. The handle area has a four pound weight added. This counters the weight of the oar out past the oarlock. In a day's rowing, you lift that oar out of the water hundreds of times. This takes a lot of the work out of your outing! Shaft comes with rope wrap and rubber stopper, for quiet rowing. Shaft length is given as with a blade attached. Blade sold separately Oversize shipping charges apply. |

Crusader454/Borg Warner pinned shaft question
I have pinned shafts in my boat. It has solid couplings with the key in the keyway. I had a 1 inch piece of the pin shear and go flying across the engine room. Need to get the rest out and replace with new. I need tips and ideas on how to get the rest of the pin out. I was told not to disconnect the coupling from the tranny or I'll be aligning the engine. I have a 5lb maul and some drift pins. Also, what holds the pin in? It had electric tape wrapped around the coupler.. but that cant be it..can it?
Is this something I can/should do in the water? If so, do I check alignment of the coupling face and tranny before bolting it together? If I do need to realign the engine, how big of a job is that? Somebody told me 8 hours.
If your in the water-you will need to secure the prop shaft so it will not leave the packing gland and let the boat sink. I know it doesn't sound likely, but that's boating for you. The pins should be a press fit. many put a hose clamp over them so they don't fly when they fracture but then you don't know if they are failing till after the fact. I have only aligned Velvet drive but would guess its quite similar. I think 8 hours is a little long for an engine alignment. It should be real close to alignment or the drive pins would be the least of your problems. The previous post was accurate.
ps- would be careful with that big hammer around those big Monel shafts-that stuff is pretty malleable. You don't want to skip rope after you are done-use a special press made just for such a problem. Wish I had a big boat with these problems!
